Twenty years ago, when Microsoft decided to enter the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) space, it went through acquiring a series of software companies that were big in the ERP space. It included the likes of Navision, Great Plains, and Axapta. Those were standalone ERP systems that were acquired and eventually rolled into the umbrella of Microsoft Business Applications. They stayed there for some years, and later Microsoft came out with their current flagship offering that we now know as Microsoft Dynamics 365.
Microsoft was one of the early adopters of cloud technology. It combined the best of these acquisitions, and legacy solutions built in the cloud while gearing them toward companies who wanted to move their infrastructure to the cloud.
And today, Microsoft Dynamic 365 is one of the most dynamic ERP solutions in the marketplace. It is one of the most common ERP systems out there.
Dynamic 365 has two core ERP products:
So, Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations is used by MNCs, and bigger organizations with complex operations go for this option. On the other hand, the smaller ones go for Dynamics 365 Business Central.
The biggest advantage Dynamics 365 has over its competitors is that it is more flexible. It can be configured and customized in many different ways.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 was originally built on the .NET platform which is an open architecture and thus can be integrated with many 3rd party systems. So, if you’re a company with multiple legacy systems and you’re looking for flexibility.
There are many ways how you can make a career with Dynamic 365 ERP. You could either work as a Functional consultant in roles such as:
Or you could work as a technical consultant as a:
Or you could work as a Solution Architect, pre-sales, project manager, etc. One such role-based certification is that of MB-800 for Functional consultants.
A Functional consultant leverages Dynamics 365 Business Central and the Microsoft Power platform to anticipate, plan and help others to configure Microsoft's cloud tools to meet their needs.
As a Dynamics 365 Business Central Consultant you have to play a key role in the planning, designing, implementation, training, and ongoing support related to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. You are expected to work with clients to determine and comprehend the current and future requirements of the businesses using it. Your expertise in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central product features and add-on-s play a critical role during the identification process to present improvement opportunities for the businesses using it.
One of your main roles as a functional consultant is to understand the processes of the business, such as finance, budgeting, inventory, distribution, sales, and order processing. You also have to have the ability to document and define these processes.
To make it big in the role of Business Central Functional consultant, you need to have a practical understanding of how to meet business requirements with Microsoft Business Central. This in turn requires you to have a solid understanding of processes including financial management, sales, purchasing, and inventory.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to know them all, but you are expected to have strong expertise in one or more feature sets of Business Central.
A good functional consultant understands the role of Business Central in the Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 suites.:
Depending on the nature and size of the organization hiring for the functional consultant role, your requirements can be anything on the lines of:
They are responsible for the set-up of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, including configuring the core functionality and modules. They are also responsible for migrating data to Business Central. They configure Business Central while collaborating with the team who handles implementation to deliver business intelligence related to management and user-friendliness. They can configure role centers including adapting insights, cues, action tiles, reports, and charts and expand Business Central with the help of different Microsoft Power Platform components.
This might sound a lot but that’s the whole point why companies like Microsoft offer Certifications to help those who are interested to prepare themselves for specialized roles such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant.
Microsoft certification program has evolved over the years from focus on product-based certifications to role-based certifications. These certifications were created to help the candidates develop the necessary skills and specialized knowledge to excel in an increasingly complex cloud role. Preparing for the MB-800 exam helps you gain the knowledge and experience to become a successful Business Central Functional Consultant.
This is the only exam related to Business Central. As the name indicates, it is only related to the functional and configuration side of the role, and not to the development and technical aspects.
This exam is targeted at Consultants, Senior Consultants, and NAV Consultants with limited Business Central SaaS implementation experience. It helps you earn the specialization in finance, trade & inventory, and administration & configuration.
Professionals who go for this certification are either working with Microsoft Dynamics 365 implementation companies or their organization is using Dynamics 365 Business Central as their ERP system. Or, they can work in sales at Dynamics 365 implementation companies.
It’s an associate-level exam. This exam is geared towards candidates who are interested in taking on the role of a functional consultant who implements the core set-up of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for small and mid-level enterprises.
The fee for the MB-800 exam is $1165. You have to answer 40-60 questions and be right with at least 70% of them to be able to clear the exam, as the passing marks are 700/1000.
This exam can be scheduled online or you can go to a Pearson Vue examination center to take the exam. Or take the exam from home in a proctored set-up.
The MB-800 certification like any other certification doesn’t guarantee you a job, or a salary hike. A better way to look at it is as an instrument to bridge your knowledge gap. Many cloud professionals who are already working as Functional consultants take the MB-800 exam to evaluate their expertise in Dynamics 365 Business Central.
It’s because Business Central is quite vast and as part of the role, a functional consultant might be using only 30% of the features while there might be another 70% which isn’t part of his or her scope. And these unexplored applications and features silently slide into their blind spot. So, while their current role doesn’t demand them to use this feature, it doesn’t mean that their future roles, or maybe future jobs will not need these functionalities.
So, preparing for certifications like MB-800 is a great tool if you’re learning in your current job has hit the plateau and you don’t know how to take your career to the next level. Enrolling in such certifications commits you to learn the technology more thoroughly, something which can be difficult when you have a full-time job.
While self-learning is one of the most common ways to prepare for this exam, your success with this form of learning depends purely on the time you have, self-discipline, and access to learning materials. One of the biggest problems with self-learning is that there is an ocean of information available on the Internet and it can be challenging for a candidate to know if it’s current. Candidates who take the self-learning route make the mistake of only referring to Microsoft's learning material. While Microsoft has done a great job providing the interested candidates with the necessary learning material to clear the exam, it misses some key pieces of training. For example - the current MB-800 content misses key learning paths to understanding native workflows.
